I’ve suffered from chronic, severe back pain since 1991. Over time, despite physical therapy, medication, and other treatments, my condition has steadily worsened. By 2007, it had reached the point where I couldn’t exercise, lift anything over 2 pounds, or work outside the home. One day that fall, my back went out so badly that I found myself literally crawling down the sidewalk from my car to my front door.
My orthopedist referred me to Dr. Cullinane. The first thing she did was to take a complete set of x-rays of my spine and a full MRI. She also interviewed me to get a complete picture of my daily routine, nutritional habits, and personal challenges in managing my back condition. No other medical professional has taken such a comprehensive picture in order to diagnose my back problem – not in the 18 years I’ve had this condition. She discovered what no one else had – that my lower back muscles had atrophied. This explained why physical therapy wasn’t accomplishing what was expected.
Armed with this information, Dr. Cullinane put me on a very gentle, routine set of stretches and exercises, a nutritional plan to improve my muscle tone and energy level, and a regular course of chiropractic treatments to readjust my spine. She managed my care, rather than forcing me to try and manage it on my own. She kept on top of my progress and helped me problem-solve around challenges, and encouraged me to look at other contributing factors to back pain. The result was a sustained improvement over time: not a quick hit, followed by a return to old habits and more pain.
By following her guidance, I have achieved substantial, lasting gains:
· My back has not gone out since I’ve begun working with her.
· I am following a daily stretching and exercise program, and I can walk 2 miles a day.
· I can now perform basic tasks such as housekeeping and childcare that were beyond my reach.
· I can work full-time outside the home.
· My energy level has increased substantially.
· I have lost 40 pounds.
It’s impossible to overstate the contribution to my quality of life, and my ability to be productive, that Dr. Cullinane’s care has achieved. I never thought I’d be this active and functional again. Thank you Dr. Cullinane for working so carefully with me, and for making it your goal to help me recover.
Sincerely,
Jeannie Voigt
